To Wood Carving
Wood carving can be defined as the art of shaping statues, ornaments, furniture, and utensils by means of cutting tools, drills, and abrasives to create, restore, or repair useful or decorative objects. Various lumbers have have their own unique qualities and are used accordingly.
Wood carving is a specialized fine working craft, taking advantage of the unique characteristics of lumber that have established this medium as human-kind's first useful and still dominant raw material.
As an art form, includes sculpture from the decorative bas-relief on small objects to life-size figures in the round, furniture, and architectural decorations.
This practitioners are skilled artisans, creating handsome household items such as spoons, ladles kitchen ware, dowry chests, benches, cupboards, and musical instruments like flutes, shepherd's popes, and fiddles. Their intricate designs are also an important element of rural home furnishings and decor.
This form of art during the Middle Ages evolved considerably from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance - in materials, tools, and methods.
Materials
The lumbers used for trimming vary greatly in hardness and grain. The most commonly employed lumbers include pine, pear, walnut, willow, oak, and ebony. They can have different properties; these are summed up in the lumber trimming handout. Wood trimming workers knew these properties and exploited them. For example, a wagon wheel was normally composed of and Elm hub - since Elm doesn't split, Oak spokes - since Oak is both cheap and strong, and an Ash rim - since Ash is tough and flexible. Oak appears to be the most common lumber - this probably has something to do with the fact that it's one of the most common trees in Western Europe. Oak is also fairly resistant to decay, which has probably led to it being over-represented in surviving pieces.
