Transylvania
Transylvania is Romania's largest and most varied region.
It extends throughout central and northwestern Romania, and is surrounded by
mountains, the Carpathians. It is an ideal region to spend a holiday in, for those
who wish to spend some time in the middle of a fairy-tale like ambience. The beauty
of the mountains and the ski slopes and other recreation facilities make it a
favorite vacation area.
Transylvania is also the most interesting region of Europe concerning the together
living of different cultures. During the history it was in turn under the authority
of Hungarians, Osmans and Habsburgs. All these cultures have marked this region and
have left traces in its culture.
Transylvania became famous not only due to the fiction of Count "Dracula",
but also through the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the unique medieval
villages, the untouched nature, the friendliness of the people and the excellent
Romanian wines.
